Antti Arnkil (b. 1975) and Olli Sinivaara (b. 1980) have edited an anthology which opens new vistas to Väinö Linna's works, Kirjoituksia Väinö Linnasta (Essays on Väinö Linna).
Rejecting a nostalgic pilgrimage to the feet of our “poet laureate”, the essays selected for the anthology explore the hidden potentials of Linna's texts. The dimensions of Linna's irony, for example, are discussed, as are Linna's female characters and characters who have received little attention until now.
One theme is the neo‑nationalist perception of Tuntematon sotilas (The Unknown Soldier). The anthology brings together nearly twenty different writers. Antti Arnkil is a literary editor from Helsinki and Olli Sinivaara is a scholar, translator and poet, whose first collection of poetry Hiililiekki (Coal Flame) came out in 2005 and second one Palava maa (A Burning Earth) was published in February 2007.
