The publishing house Teos began operating at the beginning of September 2003. Teos is an independent house, focussing primarily on works of Finnish literature and non-fiction. In addition, 2-3 translations of classic works will be published each year. In the autumn of 2007, Teos will begin a new translated fiction series called Baabel concentrating on classic texts from all over the world.

At Teos, we plan to publish between 35-40 books a year. When the number of titles published remains at a realistic level, everyone can have enough time not only to do their work well, but to enjoy doing it. Writers have time to write, editors can edit properly, graphic designers can carefully plan a book’s layout. The printers have enough time to deal with the physical layout of the book and marketing strategies can be tailored to each individual work.

Although we plan to keep the number of titles per year at a reasonable level, the selection of books covers the whole literary spectrum, from poetry to children’s literature and collections of essays.

Our business plan is a simple one: we want to publish quality books in Finnish. Publishing books is not about alchemy, rather it is merely a question of producing works and selling them. We simply want to do this as best we can.

We feel it is important to respect all those who help make a book what it is – and all those make Teos what it is: writers, editors, translators, designers, printers, booksellers and, above all, readers. Those who created Teos all share a deep love of literature and of reading.

A good book does not suddenly turn bad. Neither does the joy which creating and reading that book can bring. It is a lasting friendship.
